【翻譯】Epic Rap Battle Of History S5 湯瑪斯．傑佛遜 vs 佛雷德里克．道格拉斯 @ Jerry Huang

新一篇的ERB翻譯!這是山腳最近的重心，所以比較沒有餘力寫別的文章，抱歉~

這集可說是所有翻譯主的噩夢!因為牽涉到許多美國歷史，不過山腳還是硬翻完了!

其實山腳的翻譯有點拋磚引玉的作用，而且知名翻譯主Stident Mole(點名字傳送至他的Youtube頻道)也有翻譯的打算喔!

再來就是這集也是小有爭議，因為Thomas Jefferson的第二段根本是在懺悔，再次形成一面倒局面，山腳是覺得沒必要這麼擔心觸及敏感話題，不然反而讓ERB失去了樂趣。

翻譯不會完全照字面翻，請自行斟酌~

湯瑪斯‧傑佛遜Thomas Jefferson:

為美國第一任國務卿，第二任副總統和第三任總統，同時也是美國獨立宣言Declaration Of Liberty的主要起草人，雖口頭上打擊奴隸制度，但因債務問題而仍然維持著奴隸主的身份直至老死，此為其一大爭議，另外也有與女奴發生關係並生下孩子的醜聞。

佛雷德里克‧道格拉斯Frederick Douglass

美國廢奴主義者、文學家，一生致力於廢除奴隸制度，並曾撰寫多本自傳，講述自己的奴隸生涯並打壓奴隸制度，而這些傳記也有極高文學價值。

(註6:除了反抗英王喬治三世，Thomas也促成了第一次巴巴里戰爭First Barbary War，簡單來說就是對抗履次綁架美國水手並要求贖金的北非海盜)

(註7:Thomas發明了旋轉椅，並且坐在世上第一張旋轉椅上寫獨立宣言。這裡同時也玩了旋轉椅轉繞revolve和革命revolution的雙關)

(註16:此指3/5妥協，簡單來說就是18世紀時美國南北方州協定，將以奴隸人口乘以3/5做為稅收，以打壓奴隸數眾多的南方州各大奴隸主勢力，Thomas本身是一位奴隸主)

你幹的所有勾當不言自明

(註17: self evident意思為不言自明、不言可喻，改自獨立宣言:我們認為以下的真理是不言可喻的，人人生而平等，上天賦予人們不可轉讓的權利，包括生命、自由和追求幸福We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.)

(註18:自由鐘Bell Of Liberty是大陸會議代表人朗讀獨立宣言時所敲的鐘，但這項事蹟的真實性仍待確認。這裡是在說Thomas高喊自由卻未做到真正的人人平等自由)

噢佛雷德我從沒聽過如此嚴厲的言論

But I needed to keep my financial status situated

And the words I used where "hideous blot"

(註19:Thomas的確公開說過奴隸制度是”醜惡的污點hideous blot”和”道德腐敗moral depravity”，並且是自由後的美國國家隱憂，而他遲遲無法捨棄奴隸制度的原因是因為他有大筆債務須償還)

To describe the slave trade and the pain it hath brought

以突顯這個制度所帶來的負面影響

And I fought to stop the trade of new slaves in Virginia

但是我也竭力阻止維吉尼亞州的奴隸交易

(註20:Thomas曾任他的家鄉維吉尼亞州Virginia的議會代表，並在1769、1778、1784年抨擊和立法禁止奴隸販賣，但皆未強制執行)

(註22:有傳聞Thomas和其女奴Sally Hemings有數名子女，但尚未被證實，雖然經DNA研究發現兩家族確實有基因連結，但無法確認為Thomas本人。電影”Sally Hemings:An American Scandal”即是以此事為題材拍攝)

It's a very important holiday

這是個重要的日子

But what the fuck does it mean to this guy?

(註23:7月4日是美國國慶日、1774年宣布美國獨立同時也是1826年Thomas去世以及Frederick在1852年發表”What to a slave is the 4^th of July”演說的日子，此演說主要在控訴奴隸並未如同美國以及美國人民一樣獲得真正的自由，而此句”But what the fuck does it mean to this guy?”同時也是改寫自此演講標題)

Cause I celebrate December 6th, 1865

因為我慶祝的是1865年12月6日

The day the 13th damn amendment was ratified

真正廢除奴隸制度的日子

(註24:1865年12月6日，美國國會正式通過”美利堅合眾國憲法第十三條修正案Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution”，明文廢止奴隸制度)

And I ceased to be an alien to your unalienable rights

自那時起我便再也不是你自由宣言的外星人

(註25:自由宣言中所提到:”人人生而平等，上天賦予人們不可轉讓的權利，包括生命、自由和追求幸福We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights,that they are among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”Frederick在此表達自由宣言保障所有人的人權，但卻不包括黑奴，因此在廢奴前他都算是自由宣言中的”外星人”)

And "We, the People" stopped meaning

(註26:”我們人民We,the people”是美國憲法的開頭)

"We the people, who are white!"
